Cam Ellis-Yolmen | Player Review
Why New Club Targeted Him:
General Manager of Football David Noble said the big-bodied midfielder would be a good fit for the team. “He’s matured as an individual, and we believe he is ready to go to the next level in his footballing career. Cam will help bring more physicality to our game as he is strong and holds his ground well. His addition will help strengthen our midfield.”
Impact on the new club:
I’ll be honest this free agency move caught me off guard as I didn’t feel like the Lions lacked for much in the midfield, but the club believes they are a big-bodied midfielder short.
CEY is a brute of a player inside stoppages and will provide some excellent physicality for a still relatively young team. In the contest for Brisbane, he will help further in the development of Lions game as he’s a great first touch player when the ball is to be won. His inclusion into the side should help free up the dependency on Lachie Neale, Dayne Zorko and Jarryd Lyons who between them had over 900 contested possessions this year.
Possible impacts we might see is a move to more outside midfield role for Zorko, or perhaps even Mitch Robinson moving back into a more part-time midfield split than this year. One thing I don’t believe it’ll damage is the SuperCoach relevance of Lachie Neale. I saw that even when he shared the midfield at Fremantle with Nat Fyfe, he was still one of the better premium midfielders and scored with a similar level of consistency.
Impact on the old club:
CEY could never seem to hold down a spot as a regular spot in the Crows midfield, added to this he’s spent multiple seasons getting one-year deals. The chance to get some long term security was far too good an offer for him to pass up.
For Adelaide, it means that the midfield depth is chipped away at further and should multiple injuries happen to players like Rory Sloane, Bryce Gibbs or a Crouch brother the club then-recent seasons draftees like Chayce Jones, Ned McHenry, Jordan Gallucci might have even more opportunities.
Fantasy Summary:
Cam was fantasy relevant in all formats back into 2018 when he came into the season priced as a cash cow, but outside of that year, he’s been someone that is only a target in daily fantasy or draft leagues.
In 2019 he played ten games and averaged 87.9 in AFLFantasy including three scores over 100 including a personal best 134 against the Eagles. In SuperCoach he averaged 93.4 and went over the ton in 5 games. These are certainly decent numbers, but at his price point for 2020, he’ll need to convert his average into the 100 range which I’m not convinced he can do.
CEY is a bull in the contest and will thrive in that part of the game for the Lions; he’s ranked in the league elite with pressure acts and contested possession while being above average in the clearances. Where he gets exposed is when forced to play defensively his endurance can let him down on the spread from stoppages and his opponents that are superior athletically can outwork him.
While it’s always dangerous to rule a player in or out of fantasy relevance for 2020 many months before a ball is bounced, I see nothing about the club change that will make him a player capable of increasing his points per game that sends him into a premium midfielder. Therefore, his relevance stays in drafts and daily fantasy if the matchup suits.
