Chris Burgess is one of 5 players who’ve joined the AFL system due to the new AFL Commission rules that have state league players eligible to join AFL clubs without having to be drafted.
Burgess, 22, is a talented swingman who looks at home both inside forward and defensive 50’s and at 194cm he adds great flexibility to the Suns. He’s known for his long, accurate kick and intercepting and strong contested marking.
Despite his height he’s not just a lockdown style key position defender, but rather an aggressor who looks to peel of his man and impact a marking contest, an asset that if Steven May was to leave the club would be a very important to the Suns list.
The Suns best 22, is still something that is unknown, but I cannot see how Chris makes his way into the side as a forward alone as the Suns already posses developing key position forward Peter Wright, the new acquired Josh Corbett and will draft at-least one more tall forward with either their second or third overall pick being one of the (if not both) King brothers or Jack Lukosious. If Burgess is to crack into the side I see it primarily as a defender.
Keep an eye on his preseason, he certainly deserves to be on the watch-list.
