The Gold Coast Suns have been awarded access to 3 players from outside the AFL system thanks to the Special Assistance provided by the AFL Commission, which gave the club access to the best state-league talent ahead of the upcoming draft.d. One of them is VFL forward Josh Corbett.
In 2018 Corbett was highly regarded as one of the VFL’s best contested markers and averaged 7.6 marks per game before an eye injury prevented any more appearances for the year. In his 9 matches he scored 22 goals and won the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal the award presented to the most promising young talent in the VFL. The other key weapon to his footballing arsenal is his strong aerobic capacity, this year he averaged 14 k/m per game. Impressive for a guy who is 190cm tall and weights 90kg.
With former co-captain Tom Lynch departing the club as a free agent the Suns are desperate for some support and goal scoring power inside 50. Outside of a developing Peter Wright and the craft of Aaron Young they lack targets and forward presence something I believe Josh will add immediately.
The only thing that possibly pull me away from making Josh an easy ‘lock’ is the unknown of how he (as well as the other preselected player) will be priced at as a cash cow. Thankfully this will be something we’ll learn early in December. Very fantasy relevant either way as I see him walk straight into the Suns Best 22.
