Why New Club Targeted Him:
General Manager Football Craig Vozzo said “We are delighted that we have been able to secure Tim because we believe he is a unique talent and a high-quality person. His first two seasons in the AFL have been quite extraordinary and probably as good as any player in recent history.”
“When Tim nominated our club as his club of choice, we were committed to securing his services, and so we are thrilled the deal has been’ said Vozzo.
Impact on the new club:
When you bring a star of the competition into your midfield, it’s going to have a flow-on effect to others in the side. I believe the Eagles midfield will continue to be built around Yeo, Shuey and now Kelly at centre bounces. However, I anticipate Andrew Gaff to move back to a more pronounced wing role along with Dom Sheed. Both who do their best work as the second touch from stoppages with uncontested possessions. If anything the ceiling scores of both these players will most likely be impacted given a likely decrease in centre bounce attendances. While players like Redden and Hutchings (when tagging) will still play central roles in the midfield unit.
Impact on the old club:
It can go one of two ways, but the key variable will be around if the Cats can land Jack Steven. If a trade is successful and Jack can get his health and physical fitness back towards his best, then he’ll slide straight into the Cats midfield unit. A fit Jack Stevens will take the majority of the midfield minutes vacated by Tim Kelly. However, if a trade fails or he’s not up to full health I predict Quinton Narkle, Brandan Parfitt and even a Nakia Cockatoo to add the class and XFactor into the midfield group. Of the three, Parfitt is the one I think most primed to increase his fantasy scoring, but any of them can build a compelling case with an active offseason.
Fantasy Summary:
Tim Was a phenomenal performer for coaches this season, as a MID/FWD option, he became one of the keys to success for coaches this season. TK posted nine scores of 100 or more in AFLFantasy at an average just shy of 97, while it was 12 tons in SuperCoach and an average of 103. These numbers as a forward made him a lock-in teams, but as a midfielder, only in 2020, he does drop back to the pack. He was the 30th highest scorer this year in AFLFantasy and if you remove all current and potential Defender/forward options entering into next season that would rank him outside of the top 20 scoring midfielders for the year. If you were to look at it from an average scoring perspective for midfielders only, he doesn’t even crack the top 30.
In SuperCoach he finished 18th overall for points scored, however, if we were to break it down based on averages of midfielders then Tim would only be ranked at 19th. Can he elevate his scoring to the next level with Yeo, Sheed, Gaff, Shuey and Co around him? While I’m confident he can maintain his standards, I can’t see just yet where the scoring spike required could come from?
As a draft and daily fantasy option I like him, however, in salary cap formats he’ll need to increase his average to a minimum 110 in SuperCoach and 105 in AFLFantasy to be competitive with the uber midfielders and even then that increase may not be enough.
