Impact on the new club:

Dougal Howard is one of the most promising key position defenders in the league. His inclusion fo St Kilda signals the end of Nathan Brown in the best 22.

St Kilda’s long term stocks look promising between Howard in a lockdown role and Josh Battle who is developing as the interceptor. Jake Carlisle plays the other tall defensive pillar. If Dylan Roberton can get back, then the Saints defensive unit looks strong.

Impact on the old club:

Port Adelaide had no room to fit Dougal Howard in as a key defender. It’s why the club told him that if he were to become a best 22, it would more likely be as a tall forward.

Tom Jonas and Tom Clurey hold down the significant defensive roles for the POWER. Ryan Burton and even Darc\y Byrne-Jones can also play tall when required. Both, however, show a more substantial impact when allowed to intercept and set up the play.

Long term Dougal is a significant loss to the club; however, in the immediate barring any injury, they should see minimal impact.

Fantasy Summary:

Key position defenders are not AFLFantasy relevant. In SuperCoach they can be where players can score through intercept possessions, contested marks and spoils.

In Dougal Howard’s previous thirty-five matches, in SuperCoach he’s scored over 100 on just four occasions. During that same time frame, he is going at an average of 70.

Dougal is a sure pass for all salary cap formats. And could only be a factor in deep SuperCoach scoring draft leagues.
