Why New Club Targeted Him:

“Sam is a fierce competitor and has excellent speed and agility which allows him to play on tall and small opponents” Hawthorn GM of Football Graham Wright.

Impact on the new club:

26-year-old Sam Frost comes to the Hawks and adds to the key defensive stocks of the side. The move of Frost to Hawthorn will have both an immediate and also long term effect for the team. Long-time Hawks Ben Stratton (age 30) and James Frawley (age 31) won’t be able to be the defensive pillars for the club. Added to this with the delisting of Kieran Brand, they need some depth on the list.

During the latter half of last season, the coaching staff opted to use James Sicily away from his prominent intercept role and forced him into a more lockdown on opposition talls. The acquisition of Sam Frost can allow the Hawks back six to settle down. James Frawley can take the #1 key forward, as Ben Stratton and Sam Frost are capable on both smalls and talls. While James Sicily should be freed up to intercept and rebound for the side.

Impact on the old club:

Sam’s a high calibre person, but at Melbourne, he was always only just depth coverage for the club. The side boasts plenty of talls in Steven May, Jake Lever and Oscar McDonald who when fully fit all hold down the opposition talls. Waiting in the wings is Marty Hore and Harrison Petty both of which are highly rated for within the club. Given that Sam wasn’t in the best 22 in my eyes, the only impact for the team comes if multiple injuries happen yet again. If that occurs Hore, Petty and to a less likely extent Tom McDonald take on more key defence roles.

Fantasy Summary:

Key position defenders are almost exclusively fantasy footy irrelevant, and Sam Frost is no different. Hard pass in every formats and games style. The big win here is the positive impact his arrival has on Sicily. His arrival should allow James Sicily the freedom to become the playmaker and intercepter which saw him average 105 in SuperCoach and 95.5 in AFLFantasy during the 2018 season.
