Impact on the new club:

As the 2019 season rolled on Shane Mumford was becoming a liability for his club. A combination of frees against and athletically blessed rucks working him over and opposition sides were able to expose one of the only ‘chinks’ in the GWS Giants armour.

The arrival of Sam Jacobs to the side is a significant upgrade for a team that made this year’s Grand Final. ‘Sauce’ is a reliable performer who regulalrly wins his 30+ hit-outs per game and brings maturity and experience to the group.

The Giants are set for another tilt at a premiership. With the addition of a reliable ruckman in the side, the GWS fanbase should be expecting the club to once again go deep into playing Finals.

Impact on the old club:

The departure of ‘Sauce’ leaves the top ruck mantle for Adeliade to Reilly O’Brien. Last year he demonstrated he’s more than ready to take the job. According to the AFL Stats pro, he’s rated elite in: Disposals, contested possessions, clearances, intercept possessions and ruck contests.

By allowing Sam Jacobs to depart the club, O’Brien is the only recognised ruckman on the list that has had AFL experience. Players like Billy Frampton or Elliot Himmelberg will be used to play a relief ruck role in-game. For Adelaide, they’ll continue to look to get SANFL games into Kieran Strachan as well as target move in the drafts.

‘ROB’ is ready to establish himself as a premier ruckman in the league and fantasy football. With another preseason under his belt, the 24-year-old should only further improve his game.

Fantasy Summary:

The trade of Sam Jacobs is a win for both clubs and should have positive impacts in the fantasy football community. For prospective Sam Jacobs owners, he’s back the #1 ruckman in the team. Also, he will receive a price discount with him playing just five games in 2019, making him priced around the marker of a 70 average.

Given that just two seasons ago he was averaging in the mid to high 90’s he should be someone we track through the preseason.

In AFLFantasy he is a person of interest as a stepping stone selection. The key variable will be if coaches are prepared to have a ‘set and forget’ line up or look to generate some value in the starting selections.

For SuperCoach players he’s a genuine watchlist candidate. GWS last year was one of the best at centre clearances, and the inclusion of Jacobs should only enhance this. He’ll now provide reliable service to the midfield lead the with players like Callan Ward, Stephen Coniglio, Tim Taranto, Lachie Whitfield, Jacob Hopper and Josh Kelly. Not a bad range of players to get some sneaky hit-outs to advantage.
