As part of the trade the saw McGovern head to Carlton, the Crows were given access to SANFL talent Shane McAdam. The Crows have been big fans of Shane’s this year on the club website the club wrote:
McAdam, 23, is a medium-sized forward who impressed in his first season in the SANFL kicking 31 goals in 17 games this year. He is renowned for his forward line pressure and brings a combination of speed, agility and a strong overhead marking ability. McAdam hails from Western Australia and equalled Eagle Nic Naitanui’s running vertical jump record at the 2015 Draft Combine, while also ranking first in the 20m sprint and second in the agility test.
One factor that’s currently unknown is what premium (if any) these player plucked from VFL/SANFL as part of the AFL’s compensation rule will be given. If he’s a basement cash cow then he’ll potential be relevant, however if he’s priced at a premium even if he has good job security he may not be worth considering.
Speaking of job security, while I think he’s every chance of being in the mix the Crows have multiple players and types that could fill the vacancy of McGovern. At times this year the Crows played Darcy Fogarty who with another preseason under his belt will be knocking the door down in the sides best 22. Lachie Murphy was in and out of the side as a small pressure forward, while Tyson Stengle if he makes his way to the Crows may also be considered if the club choose to go with a smaller forward line. The positive for McAdam is that he’s got the ability to take some strong overheard marks and show aerial presence, but can also add defensive pressure on the ground.
Depending on the starting price, he should be one that’s watched over the preseason.
