UltimateFooty | Possible DPP Changes Round 3

After rounds 3, 6, 9, 12 & 15 the drafting format of Ultimate Footy awards additional player positions to players that have had a role change in season. At the conclusion of the round we’ll confirm with you exclusively which players WILL gain a new position, but before then here are some players we believe would be in consideration for obtaining a new positional status.

Nick Hind | ADD BACK

The former saint will be one of the first and easiest DPP decisions that UltimateFooty will make in 2021. Nic Hind has gone from occasional AFL player at St Kilda to a permanent fixture of the Essendon backline. His run and carry have seen many supporters not notice the gap left by Adam Saad. He’s currently averaging 93 and would have owners now torn whether to play him up forward or down back.

Thankfully depending on their squad’s depth and the availability of option in the player pool could well determine where he’s best serving his owner.

Jack Ziebell | ADD BACK

He’s in a similar vein to Hind, in that fact that the forward eligible and should pick up back status. The Roos captain has been revitalised as a scorer and will provide his owner flexibility to play him at whatever end of the ground they need.

The only flag I have is the club flagging Luke McDonald’s return as early as round four. What impact he has on Ziebell’s scoring ceiling is yet to be seen. But those who drafted him with an average draft position of 122 will be stoked with his return thus far.

Jarman Impey | ADD BACK

Since recovering from an ACL late last year, the Hawks have deployed the former Port Adelaide to provide dash off the Hawthorn backline. He won’t be the most dynamic scoring option, but given he’s still available in 18% of the league in the player pool, he is a worthy addition.

If you think the Hawks struggle this year, then Hawthorn’s defenders’ narrative getting plenty of looks at the ball could boost his scoring chances. Add that they’ll be without James Sicily or Will Day for most of the season, then it could be a decent DPP gain for his owners.

Tom Atkins | ADD BACK

Another DPP that’s been mooted since the preseason began. Geelong has spoken about and now used Tom Atkins as a defender. The club loves his pressure acts and the defensive efforts on the game. If the Cats can get their possession game going, he should be in a high 70’s averaging FWD/DEF, which would be more than handy for his owner.

If he’s still sitting in the player pool grab him now before the DPP inclusion lands on Wednesday afternoon/evening.

Jack Sinclair | ADD BACK

Jack Sinclair getting back status is possibly less exciting than what it looked like in the preseason after scoring 112 in the AAMI Community Series. That said, he is averaging 68, and while it’s not amazing, the addition of back status would rank him just outside the top 50 backs in UltimateFooty.

Dyson Heppell | ADD BACK

It’s going to happen, but not yet. He missed the round two clash and because of this he’s not played the minimum of three games required to get positional eligibility. Keep an eye out on the next batch, he should feature in this.

Errol Gulden | ADD FORWARD

Has to get it, and will be a monster addition for his owner. Errol Gulden has been the best performing rookie of the season and with scores of 108, 93 & 98 he’s every chance to become his teams F1. Rostering him on field as a midfielder might have felt potentially risky given who you might have been benching for him. But as a forward and given his proven scoring over the past three games any risk is all but gone.

Tim English | ADD FORWARD

Stefan Martin’s addition has allowed Tim to become the ‘second ruck’ option for the Bulldogs. As a result, he’s playing predominantly full forward and creating a marking target for the doggies. Normally a ruck adding forward status is only a ‘squad versatility’ move. But if the owner has another viable ruck option in their squad, English is scoring well enough (avg 78) to be a rosterable forward on the ground.

Tim Taranto | ADD FORWARD

Historically, UltimateFooty leans on the conservative side of awarding positional changes in season. Especially for moves that have big potential outcomes. Should he gain forward status, he’d move from being someone’s M3 to a clear F1. If a side has a deep midfield bench, this could be a huge addition for them.

If his role continues with this much forward time, he’s every chance to gain it, but more likely to be after round 6.

Nat Fyfe | ADD FORWARD

A combination of two things will see him be considered in the post round six inclusions. Firstly, he missed round three with a concussion, meaning he hasn’t played enough matches. Second, see above comments RE: Taranto.

SuperCoach Weekend Wrap | Round 2

Did you know it was Earth Hour, the hour where we’re to switch off all the lights in our house to symbolically show we care for our planet, on Saturday night? No? Me either. My team North Melbourne seemed to know it was though, they were so into it they didn’t even switch on. What a disaster that was.

Enough of the real footy though, that’s not what we watch matches for–it’s all about the SuperCoach scores!

ROUND TWO

Round two started well with Thursday nights game between Carlton and Collingwood. Gee, doesn’t Darcy Moore look good? He could certainly be a keeper premo for our defensive line and a POD option too. Well done to the 2.3% of teams that had him already locked.

Already we can see there are a variety of good options for defence, and looks like the first positional line we can complete easily enough. Now with Short, Houston, and Moore in the mix, alongside the regulars of Lloyd, Laird, Stewart, Daniel, and co., we have some decisions to make in the coming weeks.

For all the controversy surrounding the Geelong v Brisbane match one thing is for certain, Lache Neale owners are very nervous. They’re like every ship owner in the world right now, hoping the Ever Given isn’t stuck in the Suez Canal for weeks and weeks. For Neale, his scores over the last couple of years have been a given for all of us coaches but the start of this year is raising serious concerns.

I’m thankfully not one of them, but if I was I would be working every angle to assess whether he stays or is one of the trades. Look at the fixture, remind yourself why you chose him in the first place, and have a close look at the role he is playing this year. Or, just go with your gut.

To see Grundy and Gawn get some decent scores across the weekend no doubt buoyed all of us, particularly those ‘set and forget’ strategists. Everything was made right in the SuperCoach world once again. Nic Nat is probably worth mentioning here but as usual there’s still some hesitation, more a wait and see.

The rookie Holy Trinity of Campbell, Gulden, and McDonald in the Swans line up make things very exciting for us. Gulden and Campbell are of particular note and won’t be traded out for a while. If he scores over 60 next week Gulden will break Michael Barlow’s record rookie price rise of $119.9k. And Flynn won’t be far behind. Do everything you can to get them in this week! Jordon and Jaith are also worth considering if you don’t have them either.

This can be the week that sets up our year. I suspect most of us will be using two trades to enable the most cash generation possible in the coming few weeks. It’s worth spending the time thinking about your team balance and where the value for money is coming from. For the first time in a few years there seems to be good rookie options available and some good cash coming our way if we play it right. Good luck!

More could be said about the weekend just gone. There were some great scores from Port Adelaide, they look like the real deal. Those 13,566 teams that moved Travis Boak in this week made the right call. Let’s not forget Butters too. The 5500 owners who brought Stephenson in will be thinking differently though. Bont had a great game, with a ripper first quarter of 57 points that carried on to a solid ton.

And even Gold Coast had seven players who scored over 100. Some positive signs this weekend. Perhaps the unlikeliest player this week was Connor Downie. Poor kid didn’t play as the injury sub last week and then for some odd reason gets ‘managed’. Tough.

But perhaps the highlight of the weekend wasn’t SuperCoach related at all. For me, it was the emotional and inspirational speech given by Garry Lyon in memory of his mate Danny Frawley. A reminder to the players and the crowd, and anyone watching, that there is a time to talk to your mates about what you’re going through. And as seriously as we may take SuperCoach by checking the scores after each game there are friends and family worth checking in on regularly.

All the best for Easter weekend!

AAMI Community Series Review | Swans Vs Giants

What a big day of footy with three state based rivalry clashes. The first of them went down at Giants Stadium. From cash cows to stepping stones and premiums, we’ve got plenty of fantasy relevant players to consider from this game. Here’s my AAMI Community series review of the Swans Vs Giants.

Callum Mills

Got that midfield role though the game, so tick! However, just because he will get this role, it doesn’t automatically translate to fantasy scoring. He should be good, but is it top 6 defensive good? Those intercept marks and possessions will disappear from his score build, so he’ll need to recreate other scoring avenues.

Chad Warner

If he wasn’t on your cash cow radar before the game, he must be now. Split his time between the midfield and forward line and showed he belonged at the elite level.

Sam Wicks

He won’t get 9 tackles in every game he plays. That said, Wicks provided get defensive pressure on the ball carrier. Additionally he got into space and was a dangerous option. At his price point I like some others ahead of him, but he’s showed plenty in this match.

Errol Gulden

In a keeper league, he’s someone I really like. He’s a crafty player with neat skills and has the ability to impact the scoreboard. Having him alongside papley at the club for the next 10 years will be an exciting small-medium forward setup. Kicked a goal, set up some others and added some speed to the forward line.

Braeden Campbell

Was kept busy keeping mindful of Toby Greene. I have no questions he’ll play round one, especially with Callum Mills’ move into the midfield. He’s a beautiful kick and used it well everytime he got near it. Is he worth the premium price tag? Ultimately, the number of cheaper available cows will determine how many pay for him.

Isaac Heeney

Got through the game unscathed and played his regular midfield and forward split role. If you were keen before today, you were given little reason to change the decision.

James Rowbottom

The future of the Sydney midfield was on display today with James playing a central role. The majority of his possessions were contested and he was skilfull enough to finish up with two goals.

He’s not for salary capo formats, but in drafts especially in keeper leagues he’s well worth a list spot. The kid looks like he’ll be a player!

Tim Taranto

He’ll be the talk of the fantasy footy town today, given his performance. 31 touches, 11 contested possessions, + a goal. This is exactly the sort of game we can expect from him. When fit, Taranto is a serious fantasy player. He split his time between midfield and forward today.

Josh Kelly

Just cruised around in first gear most of the game. Still picked up a lazy 13 contested possessions and showed his class when needed. He’s a fantasy jet, but the common player won’t jump on after this match given he didn’t tear the game apart.

Kieran Briggs

Played through the ruck for the majority of the game. With Matt Flynn taking a rest, Briggs certainly took his opportunity by the scruff of the neck. He crashed in and made a contest. Whether it’s enough to dethrone Flynn or get a debut alongside him is something I’m uncertain of.

Stephen Coniglio

Subbed off during the third quarter. While he was out on the field, he was an influential presence in the midfielder and won his fair share of clearances. He might not be a top 8 midfielder in 2021, but I think he’s set to go between 100-105 across all formats.

Harry Perryman

With no Lachie Whitfiled early in the season the Giants looked to Harry to provide some run, skill and drive from defensive 50. He’s probably more draft relevant, but is certainly worth noting.

Isaac Cumming

Whenever it wasn’t Perryman, Isaac would get the ‘give and go’ handball from his teammates. He should generate some cash, but with some defender rookies starting to emerge he might not be needed in our starting squads.

Tanner Bruhn

He won’t kick four goals every week. His 11 disposal game was impressive, and he’s all but locked himself in a round 1 debut after an effort like that.

Tom Green

Got his fair share of midfield opportunities. I don’t think he’ll get enough midfield time to push the premium scoring territory.
