It’s Grand Final week! Hopefully you are in the big dance, on the verge of the ultimate glory. To celebrate, this week’s article is a bumper Grand Final special edition! I’ve picked one player from each game this round that could potentially give you the boost you need to snag the flag. As usual, the player needs to be in less than 70% of teams but something different for this week is the addition of the 3 game average. Good luck, and thanks for a great 2021!

Western Bulldogs vs Port Adelaide
Marvel Stadium

Miles Bergman – Port Adelaide – Def/Fwd
% owned – 66%
2021 average – 64.5
3 game average – 83.3

It has been an excellent debut season for Bergman, playing in all but 3 games for a top 4 contending side, and receiving a Rising Star nomination for his efforts in the Showdown a fortnight ago.
He has scored over 80 four times for the year with two of them coming in the last two games.
He has a tough opponent in the Bulldogs, but similar players such as Blake Hardwick and Daniel Howe had field days against them last week scoring 110 and 139 respectively.

Richmond vs Hawthorn
MCG

Tim O’Brien – Hawthorn – Fwd
% owned – 14%
2021 average – 57.2
3 game average – 82

One of the biggest things we look for in the fantasy world is a clear role change, and that’s what O’Brien has seen the last couple of weeks. Not worth a fantasy look in his usual role as a key forward, O’Brien has spent the last two games down back and has enjoyed a solid scoring spike as a result. He has taken 20 marks in the last two weeks and should continue that against the Tigers this week.

Sydney vs Gold Coast
Marvel Stadium

Darcy MacPherson – Gold Coast – Fwd
% owned – 63%
2021 average – 66
3 game average – 72

MacPherson hasn’t set the world on fire since returning to the senior side a few weeks ago but he is someone who is capable of scoring well, particularly if the Suns can make a game of it.
The Swans can be quite restrictive but similar players in Jaidyn Stephenson and Tarryn Thomas both scored 78 last week for North Melbourne.
It’d be a speculative pick (aren’t they all though?), but MacPherson is due for a good one, and could possibly be playing to keep his spot on the Gold Coast list.

Brisbane vs West Coast
Gabba

Daniel McStay – Brisbane – Fwd
% owned – 57%
2021 average – 64.2
3 game average – 97

Since Eric Hipwood went down with an awful knee injury, McStay has had to step up for the Lions and he has done just that. In the five games since, McStay has kicked 12 goals and averaged a touch under 85 fantasy points including 3 games above 90.
The West Coast defenders can be miserly at times but with the way Brisbane have been playing, expect another solid score for McStay to finish the year.

Geelong vs Melbourne
GMHBA Stadium

Zach Guthrie – Geelong – Mid/Def
% owned – 58%
2021 average – 60.6
3 game average – 88.3

Guthrie appears to have found his spot at the Cats after years of being in and out of the side. A few weeks ago, he scored a career best 128 fantasy points and was looking good on the weekend sitting on 42 at half time before slowing in the second half as Geelong hit their straps. Melbourne should challenge Geelong this week which will allow for Guthrie to get plenty of looks.

Carlton vs GWS
Marvel Stadium

Zac Fisher – Carlton – Fwd
% owned – 32%
2021 average – 57.8
3 game average – 60.7

Fisher has looked a chance to break out a few times in recent years, but it just hasn’t happened for him. His score of 80 on the weekend was his best score since round 14 last year (a 65 in shortened quarters) and it came on the back of more midfield time. Fisher attended 14 centre bounce attendances on the weekend which was up from just 2 the week before.
Patrick Cripps was missing last week and is expected to return which could see Fisher removed from the inside which is a concern. However, a similarly flighty player in Liam Baker scored a nice ton against the Giants last week and that was with zero centre bounce attendances.
Carlton have a fair bit of pride to play for this week and I’d expect Fisher to play a big role.

St.Kilda vs Fremantle
Blundstone Arena

Hayden Young – Fremantle – Def
% owned – 70%
2021 average – 65.7
3 game average – 83.7

Young has been back in the senior side for 4 weeks now after missing several months through injury and has looked very comfortable in the Dockers back six, winning a Rising Star nomination along the way. The former number 7 draft pick looks a real player of the future with his fantasy output already looking good. He has scored over 70 in 5 of his 11 career games (excluding one game when he was injured early).
Young has taken 21 marks over the last two weeks and will be good again this week.

Essendon vs Collingwood
MCG

Mason Redman – Essendon – Def
% owned – 61%
2021 average – 65.9
3 game average – 55.7

Redman has been hot and cold this year, hitting 90+ on 4 occasions but also scoring under 50 5 times. At his best, he is a points machine off half back taking kick ins and racking up marks. But at his worst, he simply doesn’t get near the footy.
It’s very hard to predict what he will score from week to week but after a career high 30 touches last week and a favourable match up this week against Collingwood, I’m backing him in for a big finish.

Embed from Getty Images

North Melbourne vs Adelaide
Marvel Stadium

Cameron Zurhaar – North Melbourne – Fwd
% owned – 66%
2021 average – 63.3
3 game average – 60

A couple of game ending injuries have impacted Zurhaar’s average this season not telling the full story of what has been a breakout season. He is averaging 83 in his last 6 non injured games kicking 16 goals in those games. Last week a player who plays a similar role, Bayley Fritsch, had a field day against the inexperienced Adelaide defence, kicking a bag of 7 goals with relative ease and I suspect this week will be a similar story in the battle of the cellar dwellers.

UltimateFooty | Round 6 Positional Changes
0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 37 Second

After rounds 3, 6, 9 & 12 the drafting format of Ultimate Footy awards additional player positions to players that have had a role change in season. As always players are required to have played a minimum of 3 games to be eligible and to be playing the new position as their primary role in the side.

12 players have gained an additional position. Five players have gained back status, 4 gaining centre, 0 new rucks and 3 have picked up forward status. Let’s look at who they are and the relevance to your draft sides and leagues.

Dyson Heppell | ADD BACK

Dyson Heppell missed getting DPP post round three because he missed the qualification of playing three games. Since then, the Essendon skipper has solidified this defensive role. His addition should be a huge boost for his owners, especially if they are running shallow in the backline and deep in the centre. Arguably this is one of the biggest DPP gains we get.

Miles Bergman | ADD BACK

The young forward has been redeveloped as a defender in the offseason and has shown he can get it done in defence at the elite level in his handful of games. He probably has more value to his owners as a forward, but the flexibility is helpful.

George Hewett | ADD BACK

An injury affected 10 last week doesn’t make his average (47) very pretty. But even before that, this midfielder turned defender has only had one good score all year. That was an 83 all the way back in round 1. If he can regain some midfield time, he might be worth a stash in deeper leagues. But not someone worth using a waiver selection one.

Shaun Burgoyne | ADD BACK

The 786 year old is still getting it done for the Hawks, but he seems to be well past his used by date for UF coaches. A top score of 59 and a seasonal average of 47 means that he shouldn’t be considered even with this new position.

Bailey Dale | ADD BACK

Bailey Dale has forged a role for himself as part of the Bulldogs defensive seven. He’s started to take some of the kick in duties from Caleb Daniel and is showing plenty of XFactor and class. It looks like Bevo has turned another mid/fwd into a centrepiece of the backline.

Embed from Getty Images

Liam Duggan | ADD CENTRE

With Luke Shuey and Elliot Yeo missing plenty of games, the Eagles have given others greater midfield opportunities. Liam Duggan is one of a few Eagles that have taken the opportunity and as a result he picks up a new position.

Mark O’Connor | ADD CENTRE

The Cats have continued to use Mark O’Connor in a defensive midfield role over the past month. Despite picking up an injury last week, he did enough to earn centre status.

Zac Williams | ADD CENTRE

Nothing special, but the new blue Zac Williams is now a D/C. Like all ‘centre’ adds, it’s rarely going to benefit your on field scoring, rather just allow for greater squad versatility.

Chad Warner | ADD CENTRE

Chad Warner has already proven to be one of the best value for money picks of the season. He’s found himself at home as part of the Swans midfield group and was a walk up DPP addition for UF.

Embed from Getty Images

Marc Murphy | ADD FORWARD

By name, this probably feels like a big inclusion, but on current points scoring, it’s not as exciting as one may hope. In his last 5, he’s averaging 72, and for the season, his top score is last weeks 84. All this to say, with many draft sides looking weak in the forward line, it’s nice to get a unrosterable centre now able to get back on the park. He’s still available in 28% of leagues.

Devon Smith | ADD FORWARD

His average of 73 as a centre is almost someone not worth rostering in most leagues, so he needs this new DPP to stay relevant. He now moves inside the top 50 forwards available in the game and can hopefully recapture some value for his owners.

His current role (heavy forward hence the DPP gain) isn’t seeing him score with ease. From 6 games, he’s had 4 scores under 69 and just the one ton. Helpful for his owners, but unless he can get back into the midfield, it might not be season defining.

Lachlan McNiel | ADD FORWARD

He’s averaging 39… Don’t got there! Just don’t! He’s in 8% of leagues, and that’s 8% too many!

Almost There

Jack Billings and Lachie Hunter were close to gaining additional positions, with them right in contention for forward status. At the same time, Brandon Ellis isn’t far off being back eligible. All three, amongst others, are in the mix for the round 9 additions.

AAMI Community Series Review | Power Vs Crows
0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 37 Second

It was a one sided affair in the mini showdown. The Power controlled the tempo of the game and, as a result, dominated the possession and the scoreboard. Here’s my review of the AAMI Community series match between the Power and the Crows.

Rory Laird

Confirmed his midfield role. If you like him then lock him in. Will be a top 3 defender.

Rory Sloane

Sloane looked okay, but a veteran like him and a player of his ability doesn’t break a sweat in preseason games anyway. Personally, I think age is catching up to him, and his midfield rotation may become volatile as the season goes on if he’s on your side though he only needs to have a good first 6 weeks.

Jordan Butts

Took 5 marks as a key position defender. Won’t be a large scorer but the ball will be in his area plenty. With thin defensive stocks Butts has put his hand up as an option.

James Rowe

Got involved in the play and pushed high up the ground to find the footy. Lock for R1 and great job security. Scoring a question mark.

Reilly O’Brien

Took things easy. If Crows get belted every week, he’ll be attending plenty of centre bounces as the Crows #1 ruckman.

Lachie Sholl

Quiet first half but scored 60 of his fantasy points after half time. Nicks will look to use a young crow as he pumps experience into a young Adelaide group. Awkward price, though, and Adelaide will not be a fantasy friendly enough team to warrant it.

Andy McPherson

Quality player and found plenty of the footy in adelaides defensive 50. Another that’s awkwardly priced as I believe he’s more of a stopper than accumulator.

Brodie Smith

Took the kick-ins and the Crows continually looked to use him and his booming leg to gain metres forward.

Ollie Wines

A very good, contested game that doesn’t always necessarily translate to fantasy scoring. This game did but I’m not sure wines has the consistent ceiling or upside to consider as a starting option

Allir Aliir

Took intercept marks at Will and given how thin defensive stocks are could actually be an option at his price. Hard to do it though with how poor Crows I50s were and not playing Adelaide every week. Port picking both Jonas and Clurey does point to Aliir being there intercept marking defender but scoring will be volatile and role could rotate based on opponent.

Karl Amon

Will go to the next level in 2021. Attended more centre bounces than previous years which has been the messaging out of port Adelaide throughout the preseason as well. Really interesting pick that has a lot of upside – but it’s unnecessarily risky with other safer options priced similarly or less.

Zak Butters

Will see a large uptick in centre bounces and being high up the ground. Fills every stat line and his inclusion into the port midfield could see him breakout in 2021. He’s a high impact per possession player, and his best footy performances may not always translate in fantasy though. He’s a great pod to consider starting this year.

Miles Bergman

Plenty of uncontested marks were up for grabs today, and Bergman was a beneficiary of that. Looked at home across half back and extremely composed with the footy. Likely to play R1 on that performance.

Orazio Fantasia

He had extremely high PPM as he scored 73 in the first half before being rested in the second. Handy DPP of F/D and a low salary cap price make him an intriguing option to start this year. Scoring will be volatile, but he does have a little bit of fantasy game about him.

Lachie Jones

Ready to play but won’t be a large accumulator. He won’t score enough to warrant his price but he will be an excellent player one day

Connor Rozee

Port have confirmed he will be having footy surgery. No longer an option

Dan Houston

Another ACS hype player. Took advantage of playing a bottom 4, young side, in a preseason game. If you were already keen on him, it’s a great confirmation of your own thoughts; however, if he wasn’t on your radar before, he shouldn’t be now.
