Impact on the new club:
Once ruck Tom Nicholls retired, Gold Coast was always going to be in the market during the trade period for another ruckman.
Since arriving at the Suns three-season, ago #1 choice ruck Jarrod Witts has missed just four games. The return of Zac Smith to the Gold Coast is noting more than insurance for injury.
Impact on the old club:
Geelong finds themselves in an odd position when it comes to the ruck stocks. Over the past few seasons all of Ryan Abbott, Mark Blicavs, Zac Smith and Rhys Stanley have all had times as the leader of the ruck division.
It appeared that Stanley had won the battle in 2019 after playing 18 games this year. However, he found himself on the outer in the clubs 10 points qualifying final loss to Collingwood.
Zac Smith‘s departure thins out some of the ruck stocks for the cats. However, in terms of the impact, it is barely a blip on the radar for the club.
Fantasy Summary:
He’s headed to the Suns to play as cover should injury strike co-captain, Jarrod Witts. Smith will only be relevant if a preseason injury strikes ruling Witts out for the early part of the season. Should that happen, Smith could be a viable stepping stone.
Two years ago he had his best fantasy season averaging 84 in AFLFantasy and 91 in SuperCoach. He’ll start the 2020 seasons priced well beneath that, however, as previously stated, you should not consider him unless something happens to Witts.
The exception to this rule is in drafts. Zac Smith is a prime ‘handcuff’ target with one of your final picks should you draft Jarrod Witts.
