Fantasy Football Game Updates | Rounds 9-12

2020 is a year like no other for fantasy football coaches. With the recent changes in the AFL fixture, it’s required the makers of AFLFantasy, DreamTeam and SuperCoach to adapt to how the game is played. Here’s a summary of what each format has said and the changes to the formats.

Firstly, a massive thank you to those running formats. It isn’t an easy task! I know not everybody will agree or like the changes and that’s fine. Everyone is entitled to a perspective. What every person among the fantasy community can agree on is that we are thankful for is that you desire to deliver the games for us to play. In a year that has brought plenty of hardships, loss, disappointments and life changes. The ability to play fantasy football every weekend has been one of the few things that have helped bring some stability and normality to a crazy year. So again, thank you for letting us have this one nice thing.

SuperCoach

A plethora of trades will now be available. SuperCoaches now have a total of 34 (increased from 30). Coaches will also have greater flexibility of when these can be made. During round 9-12 trades you will be able to make a maximum of three per week.

In addition to changes to the number of trades, SuperCoach will resort to a ‘Best 18’ scoring system for bye rounds (Round 10 and 11). Only players on the field will be eligible and should you have more than 18 players available in any given week. Only the top 18 scoring players will be counted.

AFLFantasy

Three trades will be available, use them or lose them, for every round for the remainder of the season in Fantasy Classic. This has taken effect immediately. No announcement has been made (yet) about reducing the number of on-field players (e.g. Best 18) during rounds 10 and 11 or about a rolling lockout. However, both have also been proposed with other things, and an announcement is expected soon.

AFLDreamTeam

To assist with byes, short turnarounds and potential for resting players, you’ll be able to make up to THREE trades ahead of each of Rounds 9 to 12. With one extra trade available to use in these rounds, we’re adding FOUR additional trades to the season total, now up to 28.

BEST 18 SCORING will apply to bye-affected Rounds 10 (Fremantle, West Coast, Carlton & Hawthorn bye) and Round 11 (Sydney and GWS bye). DreamTeam take a similar approach with additional trades and Best 18 scoring for future rounds where byes apply and/or we have additional compressed fixtures. We’ll confirm and make relevant announcements as fixtures are released.

Final Notes from SuperCoach and DreamTeam

While yet to be confirmed, we now expect that an 18th round will be added to the schedule (previously 17 rounds) to make up for each team having a bye. As such, additional changes may be made to trade numbers and league H2H schedules/finals series timings. Further decisions and announcements on league schedules as more information becomes available in the coming weeks.

SuperCoach Player of the Decade | Geelong Cats

We’ve decided to look at who I believe has been the best SuperCoach performer from each AFL club over the past ten years. Here’s who I believe it is for the Geelong Cats.

Joel Selwood

It’s pretty rare for a player to be SuperCoach relevant for the entirety of their AFL career, but for Joel Selwood you could create a fairly compelling argument that he has been.

As a cash cow Selwood played 18 games, averaged 77and posted six tons including three over 120. The following year he increased his seasonal average up 21 points to 98. Since his third season (2009) until 2018 he averaged 100+ every year.

In 2010 he played 21 games, averaged 117 had 15 scores over 100 and delivered a massive 175 against Brisbane. Between 2011-2018 his years averages were 111, 117, 118, 120, 104, 110, 102 & 105.

His 2014 where he averaged 120 he was one of only five midfielders to average over that mark. His year featured 16 tons, seven of which were above 140 and a seasonal high 176 in the final round of the year. Had Joel been your captain that round he would have delivered for you a score of 352.

Along with his scoring consistency across the decade, Selwood rarely missed a game. Between 2010-2019 he missed just 16 games and only twice in that time missed more than two games in a single season.

His 2019 season was disappointing with an average of 85 being his second-lowest across his career. Regardless, his body of work over the decade makes him the clear best performing SuperCoach cat.

Who Missed Out

Surprisingly to many might be just how dominant Corey Enright was as a premium defensive option for the Cats. One of the most dependable selections in our backline. Between 2010 and his eventual retirement post-2016 his seasonal averages were 98, 96, 94, 94, 89, 95 and 99.8. Added to his scoring consistency was the fact that he missed just seven matches during that time. If you were a highly ranked player often during the early part of the decade, chances are you often owned Enright.

If the question was who has been the best SuperCoach performer in the past few seasons, then Patrick Dangerfield is the winner. Since crossing to The Cats via Adelaide after the 2015 season Danger has been one of the highest-scoring and most popular to owned premiums. In his four seasons as a Cat, he’s had seasonal averages of 130, 136, 121 and last year as a forward 115. As a Geelong player, his career SuperCoach average is 125.89. His four seasons of dominance (and that’s precisely what he has been) just wasn’t enough to dethrone his captains decade of data.

Don’t worry about Gary Ablett, spoiler alert he’ll get his chance to be featured, but it won’t be with the Cats. After a strong season in 2010 averaging 129, he made a move north to join the Gold Coast Suns. It wasn’t until 2018 that the goat made his way back to Kardinia Park. Averages of 106.9 and 95 are nothing to sneeze at, but just three seasons as a Cat in the decade meant he was no chance of taking Selwood’s mantle.

Over the decade one of the most underrated midfielders has been Mitch Duncan. His 2017 seasons where he averaged 109.8 made him one of the most valuable unique premiums. That year in the final seven rounds he averaged 120. Beyond that year he’s had three other seasons averaging over 100 but never been a viable season long-dominant midfield scorer.

One of the most prominent SuperCoach forwards in the early part of the decade was Paul Chapman. In 2010 he averaged 116 and then followed it up with years of 101, 100 and 95. After that, he finished his career as a Bomber.

Similarly, Steve Johnson was a prolific scorer before a move to Greater Western Sydney. In 2013 he had a personal best average of 115, and he followed it up with a 106. However, multiple years of averages in the 80’s even as a forward were nowhere near enough to take the title from Jelwood.

SuperCoach Player of the Decade | Brisbane Lions

We’ve decided to look at who I believe has been the best SuperCoach performer from each AFL club over the past ten years. Here’s who I believe it is for the Brisbane Lions.

Tom Rockliff

Longtime SuperCoach players have a special place in their heart set aside for Tom Rockliff. The now Port Adelaide midfielder was a SuperCoach beast for the best part of his time at Brisbane.

His 2011 year averaging started the love affair where he averaged 113 across the season. However, it was the way he ended the year that players loved. He scored 11 consecutive tons, had a top score of 179 and averaged 124. Two seasons later (2013) he averaged 109. These seasons along with 2016’s average of 111 are strong scoring seasons. However, they are nothing in contrast to his 2014 year.

That year was a SuperCoach master class. Despite only playing 18 games, if you didn’t own Rocky, it would’ve been near impossible to have league or rankings success. He averaged 131 and posted 15 tons and had only once score below 91 all year. Of those 15 scores of 100 or more, he had six scores over 150. They were: 155, 158, 158, 168, 175 and 182.

Rocky is also a member of the SuperCoach 200 club. In 2016 against Carlton he racked up 48 disposals, had nine tackles, eight marks and registered a 204.

Over his eight seasons at Brisbane in this decade he averaged 105. Five of those years he averaged over 100, three of them over 110 and an additional two years he averaged between 96-97.

Who Missed Out

Current skipper Dayne Zorko was arguably the closest to taking the title from Rocky. In his eight seasons in the league five of them, he averaged 100 or more including his debut season of 2012. A decade average of 100 and a career-high season of 110 in 2017 is certainly nothing to sneeze at but not enough to chase down Tom.

Stefan Martin has had a few premium seasons at Brisbane. In 2014 and 2015 he averaged 111 and 110 to be one of the top-scoring ruckmen across the competition. He also averaged 105 back in 2018, but three premium scoring seasons weren’t enough to be a serious contender.

Pearce Hanley was a premium defender between 2012-2014 with a career-high 103.7. However, like many other Lions, he wasn’t a dominant SuperCoach performer consistently.

Former Lion and now premiership Eagle Jack Redden was a premium midfielder in the early half of the decade. He averaged 102, 102, 97, 103 and 95 before an eventual trade to West Coast. Had a stayed at Brisbane, he may have been a genuine contender.

Not long to go now as I safely sip on my last remaining Carona Extra 355ml stubbie, here goes.

Fox has revealed what his SuperCoach will look like for round one

Backline:

Going Laird over Lloyd as I feel Rory may be unders in 2020 and Lloyd will be my first defence upgrade, hopefully, get him a little cheaper and TBH just can’t afford both. The backline falls away quickly after Doch, but I feel there’s considerable cash to be made on this line, and certainly opens up my salary cap to spread across other lines.
Apologies to Houston and Weller who are still in and around my thought process’.

Midfield:

A 4 Premo midfield with Jack Stevens as the mid pricer. Would love to start 5 premo mids but happy to fit the 6 cab making rooks along this line, and needed a bit extra for Big Max.
Feels a little strange going into a season without Fyfe and Danger but feel the combination of my boy Lachie Neale, Macrae and Cripps can deliver big, especially adding my value pick in Coniglio. Will give Tom Mitchell a miss in this format. Clarrie Oliver will likely be my first mid upgrade.

Rucks:

After much prayer I’ve decided to go the Gawn-Grundy combo, can I get an Amen? Set and forget in Super Coach feels right, an extra two mids pretty much and no tossing and turning with sleepless nights. Timmy English was very highly considered here, but the cash was finally found for the 2 big dogs. Comden appears the reasonable loop

Forwards:

Whitfield’s ceiling picks himself, the dynamic duo of Dusty/Tommy Lynch with a plethora of early MCG games and this forward line is looking pretty good, add the midfield services of Andy Brayshaw and Devon Smith and we’re getting to Wowee Boyoboy proportions.
Biggest unique is Tommy Lynch who is priced at 72, went at 99 in 2019 after the bye including finals, and at 7% ownership is an easy pick

Cash: 108k in the bank could be handy early

Rooks: Rooks at this stage are just pencilled in

What Do you think of Fox’s Team?

What the State of Origin Match Means for your Fantasy Footy Team

For the first time in over a decade, State of Origin Footy is back! And while on first glance it may not seem like it, it has huge implications on our fantasy footy teams for 2020.

Image result for state of origin 2020 afl
Tiger Teammates Shane Edwards & Bachar Houli will be on opposing teams this Friday.

So on the first reflection, you might be pondering ‘what the hell does an exibition match have to do with my fantasy side? On the surface, I agree with you. Not alot.

However, with many of the best players in the AFL taking part, we can get one significant takeaway from those playing. Should a player line up, we must conclude that they are match fit.

Players like Ben Cunnington and Dayne Zorko have removed themselves from this game eligibility after being initially selected. If it was playing for premiership points, they might still have been selected. However, with ‘nothing’ on the line we the football public can have one conclusion. If a player does participate, they are match fit.

As much as players want to ‘represent their state’ at the end of the day, this is a fundraising game. While clubs and coaches are allowing players to participate, they will not be doing so at a higher risk than what a regular Marsh Community Series match would.

This is positive news for players like GWS Giants star Josh Kelly. Who has historically struggled for getting through a full preseason Yet, this Friday night he’ll line up for the Big V. For him to play the club must be content with the training loads and health of their star player.

If a player has an ‘injury history’ concern for fantasy coaches and is playing this Friday night, then the fear is nothing to worry about.

As we talk about often on The Coaches Panel, nobody can predict an injury. History can be a helpful guide, but it doesn’t mean it will happen.

If anything, ‘injury’ prone players need to start with them as the only option. Then run the ‘injury gauntlet’ selections. Or Ignore them for the year. Remember, the injury risk only further increases with each match played.

Will you be the 2020 Coach of The Year?

The Nobel Koel Trophy is now in our hands for the 2020 season. The question is, do you have what it takes to become the Coaches Panel Coach of the Year?

To do so you will need to accumulate more points than any other coach from the three salary cap formats of Super Coach, Sportsdeck Dream Team & AFL Fantasy.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Points will be accredited on a weekly basis to the coaches who achieve the 3 highest fantasy scores in each format on a 3,2 and 1 points basis, similar to what you see in a Brownlow Medal count.

A bonus point will also be awarded to the coach who wins their format by the most points, so 19 points are up for grabs each and every week of the 23 week AFL season.

This will be our sixth year of running the competition and we look forward to your participation.
The key to winning here is to maximise your point-scoring ability by joining up in all 3 formats.

There will/can only be one trophy winner and we ask coaches to only enter one team per format.

Here are the codes you need to be able to join

DEFENDERS

Jake Lloyd had numbers unlike anyone in defence last year and whilst he tapered off towards the end of 2019, his floor was mid 80’s, and I will take that any day. I don’t buy into the Dawson taking his points theory. He had eight scores over 120, and I can’t see his role changing dramatically.

Partnering him at D2 is Freo’s, Luke Ryan. I think he expands on a very good year in 2019 where he had five scores over 100 and 3 over 130. He is an integral link in their defence, and they love to use him coming out. I also think Longmuir brings his Collingwood defensive mindset where pressure is king, and they possess coming out, meaning more uncontested marks to go with his already excellent (81%) disposal efficiency.

Docherty and Doedee will be extremely popular and come with their own element of risk, but at their price, I cannot go past them. Tom Williamson has been highly rated at Ikon since he debuted but has been cruelled by injury. He is back on track and cherry ripe for round 1. He is best 22 and will be a very serviceable cash cow. Will Gould has been touted as a young Shannon Hurn and if he can help distribute out of the back half for the swans will be a convenient cash cow for us.

Murphy and McLennan have both had time on their respective lists and are ready to make an impact but will be a pre-season watch.

MIDFIELD

Jack Macrae has two seasons of averaging over 120. In my eyes, he is untaggable and will continue to rack up this year. He has never been in doubt as M1 for me.

Lachie Neale was a revelation last year at Brisbane, and I can’t see his form changing. At the coalface to rack up huge possession numbers translating to a huge ceiling. The tag talk is overblown, and he will continue on his merry way.

I Love Patrick Cripps… and what is there not to love. Just a beast, ceiling that few can match and watch him take it to the next level this year. Last year averaged 136 or every time he scored a 100 and missed out on the ton only seven times.

Expect that to improve in 2020 Danger at M4 is a bit of a no brainer for me. Is SC royalty and many might be scared off with his few forward stints last year and the fact he has lost hos fwd status. The loss of Tim Kelly and the addition of Josh Jenkins means that he will spend all his time bursting through the centre and giving us consistent 120+ scores.

How good is Clarry? 109 last year in a deplorable team with a double shoulder reconstruction and limited pre-season, yep, I will have me some of that. Scores over 100 in 75% of games over the last three years, of which he has played every game!!!! Durability is king, so lock him in your side and drink up those sweet points.

No Rowell, yep at this rage I am taking a wait and see approach as I feel like there are good lower-priced rookies with solid JS that will be around his scoring. May change come Marsh Community Series, but he is out for now. Like his name Pickett just picks himself. Brisbane were so pumped to pick up Robertson so late in the draft and with good reason. He will be a jet.

Big things expected for Jackson Mead and Port have already stated that they will give their rookies plenty of opportunity like last year. I like Tyler Brown and see him getting an excellent opportunity this year. Sharp and Rivers round out the bench and are both likely for early games. Rivers adding some DPP flexibility in the mids.

RUCKS

Surely the most popular starting rucks in SC and for a good reason. Their ceiling and consistency is unbelievable. I see no reason to look at any other rucks, something major is going to have to happen for Brodie and Max not to be 1 and 2. Charlie Comben is this year’s Bines/Olango/Strndica…the cheapest possible ruck/fwd that won’t play and has majority late games….. LOOPHOLE

FORWARDS

Now, this is where things get a little funky!!! The forwards this year are thin, very very thin, so I believe you can get a little creative… Everyone needs to pick Whitfield…Next.

No Dusty is noticeable. I think he starts slow and comes to the fore in the mid to latter part of the year. Hey, it was a tactic that helped them win a flag in 2019, why change it? I will undoubtedly have him in my team by years end. I choose not to start him. His teammate, however, Tom Lynch very much interests me. Priced at 71, with a tremendous post-bye performance last year (including 4x100s) I think he can win the Coleman this year and average around 95.

Both Steven and Smith are popular underpriced options and with good reason. Both proven scorers that are well discounted. Will watch in the preseason for the role. Steven Hill at a price picks himself, and the mature ager Hutchesson is a quality player if he can break into that amazing GWS side. Rankine will be in most teams, and Williams is a placeholder.

I am anchoring my defensive line with Jake Lloyd. His scoring late last year slowed, but over the previous two seasons, he has shown that if you go against him, he can take a season away from you quickly. James Sicily current holds down D2 as ai believe he presents value. However, I have the cash to move him into Zac Williams or Rory Laird should I wish to make the change. Sam Docherty is far from a certainty, but right now it seems riskier to go against him that to start him. While Doedee, Hill and Roberton have all featured in the 50 Most Relevant to date, read the articles if you want a more extended take on why they are picked lol.

Will Gould and Trent Rivers at this early stage of the preseason appear to be pushing hard for early games. They’ll no doubt change should stronger cows appear.

I am starting with four premium guns who are all captaincy options every week. Jackson Macrae and Lachie Neale have had seasons that speak for themselves last year. While I see some value in the selection of Stephen Coniglio and Patrick Dangerfield, Matt Rowell should he get anywhere near that year of Sam Walsh will prove value. However, as I wrote about earlier in the preseason if more cows appear at a lower price with a similar security, I will move him on. I think Marlion Pickett and Mitch Hibberd if fit into their sides best 22. Jeremy Sharp, Ned Mchenry and even Devon Roberton should all be pushing for selection early. Aiden Bonar is one player I’m fascinated by. If the role is right, then the scoring potential could be huge, he’s also capable of being an absolute bust. So for now, he’s a place holder, and the spot is his to fight to keep.

It’s a pretty stock standard team in this line. Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn are tough to go against. They are the two highest averaging players of 2019, and I can’t forecast any reason they decline. That said, I’m far from locked with starting both of them, and I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on some cheaper rucks like Nic Naitanui, Sean Darcy, Tim English and Sam Jacobs.

It’s a popular 1-2 combination with Lachie Whitfield and Dustin Martin holding down the premium spots. With so many questions in the forward line, I don’t have the confidence (or salary cap) to go for a big name. Both Devon Smith and Jack Steven if they get the midfield minutes both should return value on investment. Then the cash cows of Rankine, Flanders, King and Frampton should all get plenty of games early with their respective clubs.
