Supercoach Weekend Wrap | Round 3

Easter weekend.

It’s all about death and resurrection.

And this weekend we’ve seen both.

Round Three

We saw the resurrection of Brisbane on Thursday night as they managed to grab the win after the final siren. Considering they’d only led 3 and a half minutes of the game it was a nail in the heart to every Collingwood player and supporter. Lachie Neale had a great first half, one that reminded us all of how rapid his point scoring can be even if he was nullified to an 83 in the end. It might be a smart idea to think about picking him up in a few rounds when his price bottoms out. It’ll be a temptation at least.

From a Pies point of view, Brodie Grundy is most definitely back and everyone who had the VC on him was happy. Except for one of my mates who managed to miss the lockout and was stuck with Macrae as captain. Offt, that’s one way to ruin a long weekend.

Speaking of ruining a weekend, I’m reluctant to mention my team North Melbourne. It was like watching the death of a footy club in two hours. They were well and truly dead and buried by the end of it. It’ll be years before any sort of resurrection occurs there. On a positive note, Jack Ziebell will be hard to trade if his numbers continue the way they are. He’s putting up keeper premium scores and is the only one worth considering on the list.

Having had their greatest margin of victory ever the Bulldogs continue to show they’re a solid list of scorers. Even though they share the points around each week having a couple of them in our side will pay-off longer-term. For those 1400 owners who had Josh Bruce this week I salute you. You’re either playing a very smart game or you’ve never played this before. Either way, it paid off.

I didn’t talk about Tex Walker last week because I had in mind jumping on some cheaper rookies with a greater chance of cash generation. It’s too late to grab him now, but he may have to be considered a top forward option if he keeps scoring at this phenomenal level. The game is doing wonders for him, a certain resurrection from his 2020 form.

One player I have added to my watchlist after seeing some of his game is Hugh Greenwood. He may well have a 0.5% ownership for a reason, but with not many GCS midfield options he could be a great little POD once his price drops another 100-150k.

The Swans win over the Tigers was impressive, and they had more players grab a ton than I had on my long weekend jobs list. For those of us who have loaded up with as many Swans rookies as possible we’re about to find our teams worth a lot more. Errol Gulden is now the rookie with the greatest price rise ever and will keep rising for some weeks yet. Others like Chad Warner continue to score at levels unnecessary to trade. But it seems that Braeden Campbell will be the first to leave our sides after blowing out a 29 this weekend.

Jordan Ridley is in serious consideration for our defensive line, if he wasn’t already. A score of 147 helps him hold the number one defender title. Jack Steele continues his good form with 132, the only thing consistent in the Saints team this season. Andrew Gaff rewarded those teams who stuck with him, even if he will come crashing down in price in coming weeks. And Luke Shuey returned with an impressive 122.

For those Blues supporters out there, well done on keeping the Dockers quiet by not allowing any of their team to ton up. Oh, and well done on the win too. The eight 100s, including Cripps, certainly showed you guys kept your end up this week.

In the final match of the round Cam Guthrie shows he may be a viable option going forward. And those who jumped on Jaith or Impey have enjoyed their offerings.

The whole ruck debate from two weeks ago is now well and truly dead. There was nothing to worry two weeks ago, and this weekend showed just how dominant Grundy and Gawn are in those positions. Flynn will continue to make some good money for us, but surely is a stepping stone to one of those two. All I can say is, “O Captain! My Captain!”.

I’m promising myself a no trade week this week. There are injuries to consider but for those who have got through relatively unscathed then we’ll be hoping for some good price rises and stability.

SuperCoach Weekend Wrap | Round 2

Did you know it was Earth Hour, the hour where we’re to switch off all the lights in our house to symbolically show we care for our planet, on Saturday night? No? Me either. My team North Melbourne seemed to know it was though, they were so into it they didn’t even switch on. What a disaster that was.

Enough of the real footy though, that’s not what we watch matches for–it’s all about the SuperCoach scores!

ROUND TWO

Round two started well with Thursday nights game between Carlton and Collingwood. Gee, doesn’t Darcy Moore look good? He could certainly be a keeper premo for our defensive line and a POD option too. Well done to the 2.3% of teams that had him already locked.

Already we can see there are a variety of good options for defence, and looks like the first positional line we can complete easily enough. Now with Short, Houston, and Moore in the mix, alongside the regulars of Lloyd, Laird, Stewart, Daniel, and co., we have some decisions to make in the coming weeks.

For all the controversy surrounding the Geelong v Brisbane match one thing is for certain, Lache Neale owners are very nervous. They’re like every ship owner in the world right now, hoping the Ever Given isn’t stuck in the Suez Canal for weeks and weeks. For Neale, his scores over the last couple of years have been a given for all of us coaches but the start of this year is raising serious concerns.

I’m thankfully not one of them, but if I was I would be working every angle to assess whether he stays or is one of the trades. Look at the fixture, remind yourself why you chose him in the first place, and have a close look at the role he is playing this year. Or, just go with your gut.

To see Grundy and Gawn get some decent scores across the weekend no doubt buoyed all of us, particularly those ‘set and forget’ strategists. Everything was made right in the SuperCoach world once again. Nic Nat is probably worth mentioning here but as usual there’s still some hesitation, more a wait and see.

The rookie Holy Trinity of Campbell, Gulden, and McDonald in the Swans line up make things very exciting for us. Gulden and Campbell are of particular note and won’t be traded out for a while. If he scores over 60 next week Gulden will break Michael Barlow’s record rookie price rise of $119.9k. And Flynn won’t be far behind. Do everything you can to get them in this week! Jordon and Jaith are also worth considering if you don’t have them either.

This can be the week that sets up our year. I suspect most of us will be using two trades to enable the most cash generation possible in the coming few weeks. It’s worth spending the time thinking about your team balance and where the value for money is coming from. For the first time in a few years there seems to be good rookie options available and some good cash coming our way if we play it right. Good luck!

More could be said about the weekend just gone. There were some great scores from Port Adelaide, they look like the real deal. Those 13,566 teams that moved Travis Boak in this week made the right call. Let’s not forget Butters too. The 5500 owners who brought Stephenson in will be thinking differently though. Bont had a great game, with a ripper first quarter of 57 points that carried on to a solid ton.

And even Gold Coast had seven players who scored over 100. Some positive signs this weekend. Perhaps the unlikeliest player this week was Connor Downie. Poor kid didn’t play as the injury sub last week and then for some odd reason gets ‘managed’. Tough.

But perhaps the highlight of the weekend wasn’t SuperCoach related at all. For me, it was the emotional and inspirational speech given by Garry Lyon in memory of his mate Danny Frawley. A reminder to the players and the crowd, and anyone watching, that there is a time to talk to your mates about what you’re going through. And as seriously as we may take SuperCoach by checking the scores after each game there are friends and family worth checking in on regularly.

All the best for Easter weekend!

Supercoach Weekend Wrap | Round One

Round one reminds me of what a cruel mistress fantasy footy is for those of us who take it more seriously than we should. How good is it to be back!

The emotional roller coaster of the opening round brings up all sorts of feels, kind of like the Dons v Hawks on Saturday night. It raises questions about how well our preseason preparation has been, if we’ve gone with the right premo-mid-pricer-rookie strategy, and usually confirms our gut feel prior to Thursday’s bounce.

There’s nothing like seeing that player we had in our team all pre-season score big and then remember we moved him out sometime on Wednesday evening. I’m looking at you Callum Mills

But this is the fun of it, isn’t it? To consider all the what-ifs on Monday, rage trade our way through the week, and then finally settle somewhere ‘sensible’ on Friday afternoon (or Thursdays a little more these days). Well, it is for a hack like me.

But what of Round 1?

We’ve got issues to deal with all around the place.

First, Matt Rowell. We all know he’s got to be moved, but who do we shift him too? Sam Walsh perhaps? Will he end up being a Top 10 mid for the year? It’s hard to tell off the back of one round but he did look solid. Or perhaps there’s those we might be able to reach with a little more cash–Bont, Oliver, Mitchell, Boak, Merrett, Brayshaw? They’re all in the mix after performances this week. Then there’s always the option of a downgrade.

Embed from Getty Images

Second, depending on who you’re listening to it looks like Danger will be out from 1-12 weeks with his bump. This could easily become a sideways trade again, but that just doesn’t feel right, not after week one of the season. But a Dunkley, Zorko, or a Martin is a solid swap so you wouldn’t complain in the long run considering their scoring potential.

A downgrade option would be a James Rowe if you don’t have him, which would bring plenty of cash to use in other areas (see Rowell issue above). But if you don’t quite want to go the rookie target then there’s the impressive form of Walker, Stephenson, and Heeney to consider.

At best these are short-term options that will need movement later, at worst it’s just points chasing. The more risky opportunity is the option to hold for 2-4 weeks, but that’d have to be for the league only players rather than those of us going for the overall.

Become a Patron!

For some reason people are already worried about their Ruck strategy. Sure, Gawn and Grundy didn’t go as big as we would’ve liked but it sounds crazy to me that we’d consider moving them. We know their ceiling, it’s only round one, and there is a reason the ‘set and forget’ strategy is called set and forget. Don’t bring that cancel culture into Supercoach!

Plenty of decisions to be made this week, that’s for sure. No doubt I’ll be reversing trades a few times waiting for the bounce come Thursday. Whatever the case may the Supercoach gods look fondly upon your picks!

Team Reveals | Kane’s SuperCoach

Regular panelist Kane has bitten the bullet and dropped his SuperCoach side. What do you think of it?

No description available.

Defenders

Lloyd and Laird are the top two defenders, while Stewart and Docherty are in the mix for top 6 plus present some value after injury impacted scores in 2020. Young and Clark have demonstrated scoring ability at AFL level and are priced at a range that can still see them net $150k all going well. Highmore and Kosi look the most likely cheap backs to play to start the season

No description available.

Midfield

I’ve gone four guys that are in their prime, durable and proven scorers. I believe Petracca is being overlooked after his breakout 2020 season and still has another level to get to. Walsh’s finish to last year was elite and coupled with a more inside role I’m hoping for a 110+ average. I know some coaches are philosophically opposed to starting a loophole player but personally I’d prefer to have the ability loophole across the backline and midfield with Fyfe’s DPP with Laird and Clark and a second chance at a captaincy score if needed, than $150k of cash generation.

No description available.

Rucks

Gawn is the best ruck in the game and a captaincy option each week. Flynn is the Giants No. 1 ruck for the first half of the season barring injury. While Hunter is bargain basement and can hopefully string together 5-6 games to generate some quick cash

No description available.

Forward

Danger and Dunkley look set for more midfield minutes and have the ability to go 115+ if things go their way. Worst case I still have them inside the top 6 forwards. Ziebell should find enough of the ball across half back to produce a solid points and cash generation outcome.

Team Reveals | Rids SuperCoach

Last season Rids won DreamTeam! He’s got his eyes on winning two competitions in two seasons. Will this be the team that helps him win SuperCoach?

Defenders

Lloyd Laird are no brainers. Stewart and Docherty represent value and could easily be top 3 def for the year. Clark and Fantasia round out the back 6 as I do not see any defender rookie I would want on the field.

Midfield

Decided to go lighter in the mids this year. Macrae and Fyfe will be used as captaincy options. I have been big on Walsh and just see him taking the next step into uber premium mid territory.

Rowell changed my mind in his preseason game. I was worried about his shoulder but he got crunched multiple times in that game and kept bouncing up. His game is SC and he will improve thru the year.

Green looks the part this year. I think he will get enough mid time to be in the mix for a 90+ avg. Rookies pick themselves. Campbell in the mids so I can use f8 for the VC loophole.

Ruck

Gawn is the go to captain option. Hunter and Flynn combination. Hunter will start the season. Ryder is away on leave with no real return known while Marshall is likely to miss the first 4. Gives Hunter a chance to impress and allow the Saints not to rush either Marshall or Ryder back.

Flynn is the undisputed number 1 ruck at the Giants until Preuss is fit again. Flynn will no doubt get a rest but there enough rookie rucks if both Hunter and Flynn miss the same week.

Forward

Danger and Dunkley should end the year as the top 2 SC fwds. Butters I really like. He is ready to get more mid mins at Port and increase his average. De Goey is primed for a good season. Just well worth the punt he takes the next step. Rookies will select themsleves. Saunders with mid/fwd DPP will be used as the VC loophole early

Team Reveals | MJ’s SuperCoach

It’s time to kick off our Team Reveals for the 2021 SuperCoach season. Up first is our podcast host MJ. What do you think of his side?

Defenders

I know Jake Lloyd didn’t play in the AAMI community series, but from all reports it was precautionary and would’ve likely played had it been for the four points. I think the new man on the mark rules + the expansion of the kick in markings only further provides confidence he’ll continue on as the top scoring defender. Rory Laird is clearly staying in that midfield unit and we should see a comparable scoring trend to when he was in this role last year.

Tom Stewart has some inbuilt value due to an injury affected game from last year. His Cats also play the Crows in round one, the turnover kings in the forward half. Stewart should give me a huge return in round one. Sam Docherty started with a bang last year, and I think we see the best of him in 2021. Jordan Clark and ‘CJ’ are my stepping stones that hope to transition into fallen premiums quickly. I’ve gone both because I don’t trust any defensive cows on the field.

I’m not too fond of all the cash cows in our backlines, but I have got the two, I think, with the best job security stashed away at D7 & D8.

Midfield

I’m forking out the big bucks to get Lachie Neale. I’m not convinced he’ll replicate the same heights of last year, but he won’t be too far off. He’s a captain option every week, and I don’t want the hassle of trying to find the money to upgrade to him. Unlike others, I have zero concerns about Jackson Macrae and his scoring in 2021.

Josh Kelly has been in my side all preseason and has given me zero reasons even to consider moving him. The same with Nat Fyfe. While both have a poor injury history, I’m choosing to bank the points these top end premiums will deliver for as many games as possible.

I don’t love the pick of Paddy Dow, but at his price point, positional flexibility, and with his job security, it’s hard to ignore. Tom Powell is one of the easiest picks of the season. At the same time, I’m rocking the double debut of Errol Gulden and Braeden Campbell.

Rucks

The most expensive player in the game, Max Gawn, is worth every single cent. With matches against Fremantle (Lloyd Meek), St Kilda (Paul Hunter) and GWS (Matt Flynn) in the opening three weeks, it’s a tasty early run. Yes, I’m one of those guys running a cash cow at R2. I explain the thought process behind it here.

Forward

With Patrick Dangerfield git and playing through the midfield, it’s an easy selection in SuperCoach. He’s a clear top tier forward, and an only injury will prevent him from staying that way for the season. I’ve been a Josh Dunkley ‘truther’ ever since finding out he’s a MID/FWD option. I see him as the only forward capable of matching it with Danger.

The next three picks are insane value options in Jack Ziebell, Joe Daniher and Jarman Impey. I expect none to become premiums, but at their price point and historical scoring potential, given they are fit, they are easy selections.

Chad Warner is the forward rookie i most comfortable with on field. While James Rowe and Harrison Jones won’t be the most consistent scoring options they do both appear to have great job security.

Patreon Exclusive | Rainman’s SuperCoach Team Reveal

In 24 hours, the AAMI community series gets underway! So Rainman decided he’d provide for all Patreons an exclusive Team Reveal.

WHY IS HE IN? WHY IS HE OUT?

Patrick Dangerfield: I want to wait and see. I am worried about that groin and want to see how it plays out over the first few rounds before jumping.

Lachie Neale: I am not sure he can keep up the scoring rate last year given his high TOG and then translating that to 20 minute quarters. Will he be a top 8 Mid? Yes, but can???t start them all.

Zac Williams: Need to see him again in AAMI; what is the average difference between him and, say a Hayden young? I am not sure. If he plays more solid mid minutes and, importantly looks like there is some synergy with the other mid rotations he might come in. Some of the unique picks:

Luke McDonald: This position was Luke Ryan, but his back injury last week, although he seems fine, worried me off a little. If, and it is a big If McDonald picks up where he left off at the back end of last year, it is a role that will just bank points. The ball will be down there a bit and I can’t see Noble changing this too much.

Jack Macrae: Everybody is scared of the dogs mids, I just don???t see it. Treloar will be out for round 1, maybe longer. Macrae will play mid, potentially off to the wing, but nowhere else. He is the best scoring mid across the last 3 years, and no one is picking him. I think he is the perfect kind of unique.

Josh Kelly: Man Crush This guy just has to turn up to score SC points, is an absolute jet whos body has failed him, but I am hoping this is his year. Huge ceiling and consistency when he is on the park.

Nat Fyfe: SC royalty that is getting overlooked, with less rotations means he pushes forward and is super damaging there so best of both worlds in my eyes. Will score whether forward or through the midfield.

Tom Green: THIS KID IS A BEAST. Limited games to go off, but I think he has the perfect SC game. A cross between a young Patty Cripps and Clarry Oliver that will be a bull in that GWS midfield. At his price I like him more than Rowell for 150k less.

Question marks:

Josh Dunkley: Keen to see him run around in AAMI to see where he lines up; it may become Danger if it doesn’t???t look great, but I love his ceiling. Jordan Clark: I think he is best 22 at the cats, but I am not sure. Duncan and potentially smith out early help him make his case either on a wing or half back. I like him as a player. The question is, does Chris Scott?

What does the AFL Fixture mean for each fantasy football format?

The final few rounds of the AFL fixture have been announced. Here is how all four formats of it will handle the revised fixture.

Right out of the gate, you’ve got more trades! The three extra trades will be added to the season total, which now stands at 37. The same bye rules will apply as we have already seen this year with the bye rounds of 14-16 with “best 18” scoring and an extra trade.

Rounds 13, 17 and 18 operate as usual (22 scoring players as selected, max 2 trades per round).

If you’ve got a focus on leagues then finals head-to-leagues finals will start in Round 14 and skip a round before continuing in Round 16. In Round 15 the scores still count towards your overall ranking but

With the decisions made by the formats, it’s arguably the least impacted by the bye rounds. Here are the three things you need to know that AFLFantasy will have for the rest of the season.

  • 3 Trades a week, use or lose
  • Rolling lockout
  • Award a players average when on a bye round on the provision they played the week before the bye.

Bye-affected rounds 14, 15 and 16 will revert to Best 18 scoring, with a maximum of 3 trades available for each round.

Therefore, an additional 3 trades will be added to the season total (now up to 31 for the season). These trades will be made available ahead of round 13. Rounds 13, 17 and 18 operate as usual (22 scoring players as selected, max 2 trades per round).

Your league H2H season will conclude at round 13 as currently set. H2H league finals will commence in round 14 and conclude in round 18 – with round 15 being a ‘bye’ week in your leagues. So, you will play a regular 4-week finals campaign over rounds 14, 16, 17 and 18). Round 15 will otherwise count for total points.

Similarly, Dream Team Eliminator will skip round 15 and now conclude in round 18 (as opposed to previously planned round 17).

DREAM TEAM DRAFT

With Draft already re-configured to take place over 17 rounds at the start of the season, all leagues will still run for 17 rounds. To minimise impact of the 6-team bye round, Draft will void Round 15 completely for ALL leagues – with the season to complete in round 18.

Therefore, each league’s originally scheduled game play over rounds 15-17 will now simply take place over rounds 16-18. For example, if your league was set to play finals over rounds 14-17, they will now take place over rounds 14, 16, 17 and 18, skipping round 15.

Round 14 & 16 have two teams on a bye and will be treated as per previous bye rounds where leagues will need to add adjustment scores if desired.

Round 15 has six teams on a bye and will be also be treated as per previous bye rounds, however, we will be providing options to exclude this round from affecting finals:

We are enhancing the Edit Finals System tool to allow PLUS leagues to exclude Round 15 from finals. This option will be available by the start of the next round. For non-PLUS leagues that were due to have their finals start in Round 15, finals will now start in Round 14 and Round 15 will be a bye.

Navigating The Festival of Football

It all begins tonight, 33 games over the next 20 days! As an AFL fan, it’s a thing of beauty. As a coach of fantasy football teams, it’s layered with potential chaos. To help you through the next few rounds, we asked the members of The Coaches Panel to share with you some essential tips to get you through the next rounds.

Don’t to treat it like a normal bye round | Rids

Years gone by have had six teams missing in a single bye round. While that may happen in the weeks yet to be announced, currently the two rounds we do know are either two or four teams missing. The result is it won’t be as hard to navigate the byes. The issue will be the compressed fixture and the possibility of testing of players.

Know your side | Kane

When are your players 22’s announced? When are they locked out? Hold your moves as late as possible. Prioritise long term issues instead of short term cash drops

Utilise the rolling lockout | Rids

Maximise the bench loopholes with rookies. You might be able to make up some points, additionally move a possible poor cash cow score to get it off the field.

Points On Field | Rids

Always try to leave a trade in the kitty for an emergency. Identify rounds where cash will be king (more viable rookies available on the bubble) but never lose sight that points on the field will always determine the ranking or league wins.

Weather Watch | Rids

Always be aware of the weather forecast before making a trade. Wet weather footy can impact different players.

Know the new rules for each format and use them to advantage. | Tim

They each give different opportunities for those who plan. Like any good plan you also need backups.
