What is the 50 Most Relevant?
0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 32 Second

And so it begins! Another fantasy football preseason filled with optimism, hope and the possibilities that in 2020 maybe this year will be your year for fantasy success.

Between now and when the season opens, and lockouts commence you will consider hundreds of players, trial thousands of combinations and probably tinker with your fantasy football side multiple times per day. Here at the Coaches Panel, our desire is never to tell you what to do. Instead, it’s to give you useful information for you to make informed decisions about your side.

What makes a player fantasy football relevant?

It’s several factors, including but not limited to: starting price, scoring ceiling, scoring consistency, what position they hold, and the opportunities that may have become available during the offseason. These are just some of the reasons a player is relevant in salary cap formats.

The list isn’t about predicting the top 50 averaging players for the year, far from it. Instead, it’s about looking at all players, across all salary cap formats to see who could help us achieve our goal of fantasy footy success.

The goal of the 50 most relevant and fantasy footy content, in general, this early in the preseason is about doing the research, having open-minded conversations and seeing the potential possibilities at our fingertips.

Too often as fantasy coaches, we can become entrenched in a certain way of thinking and don’t enter into a new season with an open mind. Whether it by being ‘burnt’ by a player previously or having a strategy fail. By closing our mind we close ourselves to possibilities. Great coaches always consider different players, alternative approaches and new ways of playing the game. Who knows, we may find ourselves missing out on the very manoeuvre that could be the difference in you winning the title.

When Does it Start?

Starting January 1st, and then for the following 49 days, I’d like to invite you to join with me as I share with you who I believe are the 50 most relevant players in one combined universal list.

The countdown will include a daily article, podcast as well as a drafting range projection for both single-season and keeper leagues. And if you wish to get early access to 50 Most Relevant podcasts, then you can do that by joining our Patreon.

I look forward to spending the next few months discussing fantasy footy and can’t wait to hear about your thoughts on who I believe are the 50 Most Relevant players for the coming season.

JOIN THE CONVERSATION

Throughout the countdown some players you’ll agree with, others you won’t, and that’s OK. This is a subjective list, but one that I hope encourages you as a fantasy coach. Other members of the panel and I would love to chat about all forms of fantasy with you.

AFLFantasy Discounts and Prices for 2020
0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 50 Second

The team at AFLFantasy HQ have started to reveal the AFLFantasy Discounts and Prices for 2020. Take a look at some of the players that you may be considering this AFL preseason.

On the most recent AFLFantasy podcast from The Traders, they revealed the magic number (7418), which is what you multiply against players averages to get there starting price. Here are some of the players set to get big discounts in 2020.

AFLFantasy | The Discounts

One of the most anticipated prices reveals is Brownlow Medalist Tom Mitchell (MID). Tom has received the full 30% discount and will enter the season priced at $671,000. After missing the past two seasons, Carlton defender Sam Docherty will set coaches back just $563,000. As a price point reference that will see him priced in the range of players who averaged 76 like Brayden Maynard and Michael Hurley.

Former GWS Giants skipper Callan Ward (MID) may be of interest as an early-season stepping stone. He’s been given a 27% discount and will start the year priced at $539,000. Before his ACL injury, you have to go back to 2011 for the last time he didn’t average over 90.

Devon Smith (MID/FWD) receives a small 9% discount, but this will not be on his 2019 average (79.4), but rather his 2018 average of 106. He’ll enter the 2020 season priced in the high 90’s averages, based on that he doesn’t present significant value as a starter so at this early stage he’s an upgrade target.

Keep an eye on the health of St Kilda defender Dylan Roberton. He featured in last years 50 most relevant series and before succumbing to further health complications he was already one to consider. However, another missed season has meant he’ll be priced at a bargain of $327,000. For a reference point that’s just $57,000 more than what Matt Rowell (MID) will be priced. Not a bad price for a guy who averaged 90 In 2017.

If you’re considering a cheaper ruck in your starting lines, some coaches might be tempted to start a discounted ruck. Coaches might consider starting either or both of Nic Naitanui ($471,000) or new Giant Sam Jacobs ($514,000).

AFL Fantasy | More Price Reveals

Fantasy coaches keen on the Angus Brayshaw (MID) rollercoaster will be outlaying $653,000. Lance Franklin (FWD) will be priced at his lowest average (70.5) in over a decade at $523,000.

After a career-best season in 2019 and averaging 122 Brodie Grundy (RUC) is the most expensive player next year starting at $906,000. Lachie Whitfield (MID/FWD) will be the most expensive forward this year starting at $844,000.

AFLFantasy | Launch Date

Next week on the AFL website The Traders will commence club by club price reveals starting with the Gold Coast Suns. These will run until the format opens around the last week of January.

What about DreamTeam & SuperCoach?

Both formats are just days away from releasing the Team Pickers. For those who purchased the assistant coach, you’ll be able to start creating your teams and trialling different strategies shortly. For the rest of us, we’ll be waiting a further 30-40 days before both formats open.

Breakeven: Round Two
0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 38 Second

Buy low, Sell high! It’s the age-old motto to succeed in Fantasy football of all formats. Every week we discuss the players with the lowest and the highest breakevens.

Charlie Constable (MID) $277,000 | Breakeven -38

Currently in 56% of sides, but in all honesty if he’s not in your team, he needs to be the #1 priority this week. Certainly looks like he’s healthy enough an option to keep as playing on field option over the next 3-4 week.s

Willem Drew (MID/FWD) $272,000 | Breakeven -32

Over 60% of coaches have enjoyed his scoring over the past two weeks. One thing is uncertain though, what impact (if any) will the return of co-captain Ollie Wines have to his midfield role upon return from injury which looms likely as this coming week.

Xavier Durrsma (MID/DEF) $315,000 | Breakeven -15

Starting to get pricey to attain, but given his low breakeven, he’s still a trade target, primarily if your breakout candidate hasn’t worked out the way you’d planned.

Gyran Miers (FWD) $220,000 | Breakeven -10

As long as the Cats keep winning and he plays this role he’ll maintain his spot in the side.

Jack Petruccelle (FWD) $222,000 | Breakeven -10

Like all small forwards his scoring deviation will be high, but given he’s coming off a 70+ score and has clear job security now he certainly deserves to be a cash generation target, especially if others on this list are already within your side.

Matthew Parker (FWD) $258,000 | Breakeven -10

I trust the ceiling more of Parker than Jack and Gyran above, that’s self-evident given his performances over the past two weeks. Let’s hope he can continue on scoring 50+ for us over the next three weeks and push his value north another $100k. Still worthy of a spot on the field especially, if it’s a choice between all 3 of the small forwards.

Michael Gibbons (MID) $214,000 | Breakeven -5

He’s going to be a slow-burning cash cow and certainly not one I’d want to have to field unless injury misstruck you. That said he’s got strong job security and will bubble along nicely and if his value can get close to $300k, then that’s got to be a win.

Rather than writing a paragraph of commentary about the most important players in DreamTeam I thought I’d share with you the top 20 players who have played 2 games and have a negative breakeven.

Wednesday, March 20th

6:30pm (approx.): Carlton & Richmond release their Round 1 teams (22 + 4 emergencies)

You’ll want your AFL Fantasy (AF), Real Dream Team (RDT) SuperCoach (SC) & Ultimate Footy (UF) draft teams all set up and ready to go as best as you can guess at this point, just in case of server/freezing issues closer to Round 1 starting.

Embed from Getty Images

Thursday, March 21st

5:50pm: Carlton & Richmond name any late changes

6:30pm (approx.): Round 1 teams are named for the remaining matches. Sunday games will only be extended benches (St Kilda v Gold Coast, GWS v Essendon, Fremantle v North).

You’ll now have about 50 minutes to update all of your various teams across formats, however most things should only be partial lockout at this point so have a list ready to go of any vital changes you’d have to make before Carlton v Richmond begins (eg if certain rookies are/aren’t selected, if any Carlton or Richmond players are your backups to plug into your team or onto your field etc). Beware of certain formats freezing at this point (UF has been the worst for this in recent years, however people have also had their seasons ruined due to glitches in AF’s programming as well so be careful attempting to change things very close to lockout in that format).

7:20pm: Carlton v Richmond begins:

  1. Partial lockout begins for AF, RDT & SC. All Carlton & Richmond players are now locked. You cannot put the ‘C’, the ‘VC’ or an ‘E’mergency designation onto or off them now. You can’t trade any of them in nor out of your teams. You cannot move them to a new position if they are DPP.
  2. If you’re using the VC or Emergency loophole in AF, you must use players from this game as AF fully locks out from the Friday game (eg put Dusty/Cripps as VC).
  3. Any Ultimate Footy (UF) draft leagues that are locked as of the first game of the round are now fully locked for Round 1.
  4. Any UF leagues that are not locked as of the first game of the round will nonetheless have their Carlton & Richmond players locked.
  5. Beware that in UF there are separate settings for ‘Weekly lineup lockout’ and ‘Weekly signing lockout’. Even if your league has a full/partial rolling lockout for lineups, if its signing lockout is the first game of the round you can’t pick any free agents up at this point (if you do they’ll only be available for Round 2+).

Once the first game has begun, you still have partial lockout in all salary cap formats and still have unlimited trades among the remaining 16 teams’ players.

Friday, March 22nd

5pm: Final 22’s & emergencies are named for the Sunday games

6:20pm: Collingwood & Geelong announce any late changes

At this point you should be finalising your AF team as it has Round 1, and thus season lockout, once the Friday game starts (at least, according to the AF website).

7:50pm: Collingwood v Geelong starts:

  1. AF is now fully locked out
  2. RDT & SC are full rolling lockout all year (RDT is new to this, SC has long had this) so unlimited trades continue for Round 1, minus Carlton, Richmond, Collingwood & Geelong teams

Embed from Getty Images

Saturday, March 23rd

1:45pm: Melbourne v Port Adelaide starts (the first Saturday game)

  1. This is the important time and date for any UF leagues that have lineup or player signing deadlines as of the first Saturday game

The rest of the rounds’ games will continue on from here, with RDT & SC (and some UF leagues) slowly locking out incrementally as each AFL game begins

Your season is now fully underway – Good luck!

Team Reveal: Rids

Read Time:1 Minute, 38 Second

I wanted to take a different strategy into AFL Fantasy this year. It is the first time I will be taking this format seriously.

Point One

I wanted to have a deep midfield but also mix it up with guys who have an excellent early draw – Seb Ross (Gold Coast, Ess, Freo and Hawks first 4) as well as guys who I think represent value just under the true premium price tags – Rockliff, B.Crouch and Taranto.

Point 2

I see zero value in Gawn and Grundy from the start, so I wanted to select two guys who I think will minimise the point damage early but also who have the bye after round 13. This way I can upgrade through the byes one if not both of the rucks to make sure I get the best playing 18 I can. I think Jacobs and Witts could match Gawn and Grundy for total points playing an extra game through 13 rounds.

Point 3

The backline is very thin this year. The new rules are a total unknown, and it is an utter guess trying to work out who it favours and doesn’t favour. So instead of guessing, I have decided to load up on the value guys and rookies. I will try and upgrade one by one through the season proper when the draw dictates which premium to select.

Point 4

Because I am taking a risk in the backline, it is crucial for me to select the three best premium options available in the forward line. I think Danger, Dunkley and Billings represent that for this year. Then I wanted to go unique with f4 so I could push Parker to the bench. There aren’t heaps of scoring depth across the rookies in 2019, so I will try and select the cheaper ones and hope for the best.

So! What do you think of the team? Have your say on Facebook,  Twitter or Instagram

50 Most Relevant: The Concept
0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 24 Second

And so it begins! Another fantasy football preseason filled with optimism, hope and the possibilities that in 2019 maybe this year will be your year for fantasy success.  For us at The Coaches Panel after our 12-month hiatus, a new website location it’s time to once again take part in helping you in your journey of Fantasy Footy glory.

Between now and March 21st 2019 when the season opens and lockouts commence you’ll look at hundreds of players, trial thousands of combinations and probably tinker with your fantasy football side multiple times per day. Here at the Coaches Panel, our desire is never to tell you what to do, rather it’s to give you good information for you to make informed decisions about your side.

What makes a player fantasy football relevant?

It’s a number of factors, including but not limited to: starting price, scoring ceiling, scoring consistency,  what position they’ve been allocated by Champion Data and the opportunities that may have become available during the offseason. These are just some of the reasons a player is relevant in salary cap formats.

The list isn’t about predicting the top 50 averaging players for 2019, far from it. Rather it’s about looking at all players, across all salary cap formats and using the premiums, mid-price, stepping stones and cash cows available to us to see who could be helpful in helping us achieve our goal of fantasy footy success.

The goal of the 50 most relevant and fantasy footy in general this early in the preseason is about doing the research, having open minded conversations and seeing the potential possibilities at our fingertips.

Starting January 1st, and then for the following 49 days, I’d like to invite you to join with me as I share with you who I believe are the 50 most relevant players in the salary cap formats of SuperCoach, DreamTeam & AFLFantasy in one combined universal list.

The countdown will include a daily article, podcast as well as a drafting range projection for both single season and keeper leagues. And if you wish to get early access to 50 Most Relevant podcasts then you can do that by joining our Patreon.

Become a Patron!

I look forward to spending the next few months discussing fantasy footy and can’t wait to hear about your thoughts on  who I believe are the 50 Most Relevant players for 2019.

JOIN THE CONVERSATION

Throughout the countdown some players you’ll agree with, others you won’t and that’s OK. This is a subjective list, but one that I hope encourages you as a fantasy coach. I and other members of the panel would love to chat about all forms of fantasy with you.
